Chairman Thompson to Lead Trip to Puerto Rico to Examine Hurricane Maria Recovery Operations

(WASHINGTON) – Tomorrow, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, will lead a trip to Puerto Rico to examine the current status of FEMA’s Hurricane Maria recovery operations. Joining Chairman Thompson on the trip will be Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY), Rep. Al Green (D-TX), and Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL).

The trip will consist of meetings with Federal, territorial, and local officials, as well as with non-profits and community leaders. The trip will include visits to key disaster preparation staging sites and meetings with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the National Guard, both of which played a key role after Hurricane Maria.

Chairman Thompson said, “It’s been over a year since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and the island is still recovering from the deadly storm. We cannot forget about our fellow citizens. We must continue to support Puerto Rico and bring awareness to the devastation that Hurricane Maria brought to the island. This site visit is a critical step in providing oversight of the current situation so that we will have firsthand knowledge of the issues Puerto Ricans still face. It is my hope that we will walk away from this experience with a clearer picture of the help and resources that Puerto Ricans still very much need.”
